Bertrand Sourdais is a busy winemaker, commuting from his ancestral home in the Loire Valley to Spain’s Ribera del Duero, where he also makes wine. In Chinon, he biodynamically farms 12 of the 70 hectares of hillside vines in the village of Cravant-les-Côteaux, considered as the grand cru of the appellation. Lying on the middle of the slope, on limestone rock, are Bertrand’s parcels of Cabernet Franc, an historical grape from the Basque country, brought to the region by pilgrims returning centuries ago from Santiago de Compostella. This 2021 has a bright, crimson colour; fresh, soft, berry aromas; on the palate, it is has clean fruit flavours with attractive varietal character - rose hips, wild strawberry sweetness - and finishes with soft integrated tannins and good persistence. An impressive wine to serve slightly chilled and to drink young with light meals.
